Message from Executive Director
Dear, Friend, Sponsors, and Supporters of The Kenya Project:
What is happening in Kenya? This has become the question I often answer, most everyday. Yes, Kenya has been all over the news, but not because of how well the country is developing, but how difficult the political transition has been.
In the Bible, we know of Nehemiah, who lived in a foreign country, Persia, and had to wait for people to come from his homeland and bring him reports of the state of Jerusalem. (Nehemiah1:1-11). Fortunately, we did not have to wait for people to come to the United States from Kenya, since we are surrounded by different kind of media, which reports the news as it happens. I do not know how long Nehemiah had to wait, but I am impressed by his reaction when he heard how bad things were. Instead of changing the channel or trying to read more on-line, he prayed!
We all know the plight of Kenya. We can not solve the problems of everyone, but we are part of the solution. In Kenya and at Mountain Park, there are needs today. Yes, we do need to spend time praying, but as we pray, let us also act.
I believe that in God's sovereignty, and that he placed you and me in this ministry “for such a time like this.” As we enjoy the peace and comfort of our home and life we may take time to pray and give towards this work.
I have spent time praying just like Nehemiah prayed and even confessed the sin's of his own people. In Nehemiah's prayer, he:
- Appeals to God on the basis of his promises -- in this case to restore his people to Jerusalem. (of Kenya)
- Appeals to God on the basis of God's own Name and reputation. (a faithful, never failing and able God).
- Appeals to God as a master on the basis of the needs of his servants. (God is in control of it all).
- He was patient in prayer and sensitive to the Lord's leading. (God will answer prayer).
- Nehemiah prays both at length, in private and in brief spurts as the crisis unfolds. (never stop to praying).
- Nehemiah acts on the basis of his prayer, willing to put himself in personal danger in order to see God's will accomplished. (How much are we willing to stand up for the work of Kenya Project?).
The suffering of his countrymen in Jerusalem was Nehemiah’s suffering. Their shame is his shame. Their exposure to danger is bad news for him too. That applies to us as we think and pray for Kenya.
I hope each one of us has prayed for Kenya and will continue to do so, but as you do, please do not forget that you can be part of the solution by providing the much needed support through your continued giving. Our most current needs are sponsors for the children and the orphans who will live in the children’s home, support for the Feeding Program, as the costs of food has more than doubled, and support to complete the first children’s home. God bless you.
Because of Him

The Kenya Project Vision
Our vision at the Kenya Project is to provide opportunities for children of Kenya to know and experience the love of God through opportunities to become who God destined them to be. Since 1998, we have worked diligently to provide the resources and facilities for our children’s health, educational and spiritual development. Through the sponsorship of children and the generosity of others, 350 children now have connections to American families and attend school on our expanding campus.
Currently, 550 children attend Mountain Park Academy from pre-K (age 3) through 8th grade. The “upper school” houses eight classrooms, a library, computer lab and administrative offices for the entire campus. Unfortunately, the classrooms in this five year old, multi-storied facility accommodate only 250 of the older students. The remaining 300 attend classes in dark, sawmill buildings that crowd the children together shoulder-to-shoulder. On one of our recent medical mission trips, we found swarms of mosquitoes coming up through the loose floorboards and biting the youngest and most vulnerable children.
Approximately 50 students are sponsored in various secondary schools in Kenya after graduation from Mountain Park Academy. Two students currently have scholarships to college and university.
Utenzi Homes provides housing and sponsorships for orphans. The first home is opening in the spring with 17 children and two house parents. The long term goal is eight homes for 120 children at this location.
In September 2008, a mission team celebrated with the children, teachers, family members and local villagers ten years of progress and God’s faithfulness to this ministry. The drilling of a water well and our aggressive feeding program have dramatically improved the health of the children and thousands of local residents.
The construction of a new primary school building is the top priority in 2009. Architectural plans have been drawn and $57,000 of the $350,000 required has been raised. We plan to send five mission teams to Mountain Park Academy in 2009 and hold fundraisers in the United States to raise funds for the primary school. New sponsorships for the remaining children continue to be a high priority. Ladies church circles, men’s’ clubs, Sunday School classes, mission committees and civic organizations are all on our target list. As the Kenya Project begins 2009, we will focus on these two goals. We are so blessed in the United States to have our children live in loving families and attend classes in school facilities conducive to learning. We believe the Kenyan children we love so dearly deserve the same opportunity.
